Residential placement at the Lawrence Avenue group home is available to facilitate the assessment and treatment of behavioural and mental health challenges of youth in care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development. While alternative homes are being arranged, the Lawrence Avenue residence temporarily provides youth with a higher level of supervision.
The Lawrence Avenue residence is a four bed home in the heart of Kelowna. The house is comfortably furnished. Each youth has a private bedroom.
The residence provides stability, education, structure and routine in a clean, safe, predictable environment. Youth residents are encouraged to form positive relationships in the community through recreation, education and counselling.
Eligibility requirements
Youth residing at the Lawrence Avenue residence:
- Are referred to The Bridge Youth & Family Services by the Ministry of Children and Family Development
- Must be under 19 years of age
- Must not be in custody of dependent children
- Require 24 hour supervision and care
- Need assistance/support to address behavioural, emotional or family problems that prevent participation in family or community life.
All youth at Lawrence Avenue are assigned a counsellor to assist them in the development and implementation of a service plan. Through the youth residences, The Bridge Youth & Family Services provides young people in care with the opportunity to:
- Broaden personal assets
- Demonstrate physical, social, emotional and psychological well being and enhance interpersonal skills
- Establish significant attachments with other, which may include family, friends, school, and community and maintain those positive relationships
- Demonstrate stability in current placement and achieve transition to other appropriate care/living environments
