This program provides and supports opportunities for young people, ages 15 through 19 that promote the acquisition of skills in order to facilitate a competent transition to adulthood.
Youth Transitions believes in the inherent value of young people and recognizes that they bring unique knowledge and experiences to the program. Program participants are involved in all aspects of program planning, development and evaluation. Together, service providers and participants bring unique resources which contribute to the continuing evolvement of the project.
Youth Transitions is designed to:
- Provide young people with the support of a counsellor while they are parenting, attending a treatment, educational or pre-employment program or while they are involved in an active job search.
- Assist young people in maintaining a transition suite. Transition suites are situated throughout the community and provide self-contained accommodation for young people. A mentor remains on each site to provide support and to assist the young person to gain or enhance the skills necessary for a competent transition into the community.
- Assist young people in locating and maintaining safe and affordable accommodation that meets Okanagan Families Society/Ministry for Children and Family Development's standards.
- Provides young people with the opportunity to gain a realistic living experience in the community.
- Assist young people in enhancing the skills necessary to live competently in the community.
- Provide young people with opportunities to participate in social, cultural and recreational activities of their choice.
The Program offers:
- Financial support through the Ministry for Children and Family Development.
- Regularly scheduled meetings with your counsellor who will offer support and encouragement while you achieve the goal of a competent transition to adulthood.
- Advocacy, information regarding community resources and coordination of referral to any other services you may require while in youth transition that will promote your competent transition to adulthood.
